Many problems and conditions of the hand may be managed through the use of reconstructive plastic surgery: tendon or bone trauma injuries, degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, nerve compressions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, palmar fascia retractions (i.e. Dupuytren´s disease) or hand tumors.
Reconstructive microsurgical technique also allows the replantation of an amputated finger or hand immediately following the accident, but also makes it possible to transfer fingers from the foot to the hand in order to recover function and cosmesis in partial or complete amputations of the digits not replanted in the emergency setting.
